When 007 Cinema Meets Real Life: The Other Fellow at Cinema Babylon

Last night at Berlin’s iconic Cinema Babylon was one of those rare cinematic evenings where the boundaries between pop culture fiction and real life completely blur.

Babylon hosted a special screening of The Other Fellow (2023), followed by a live Q&A with director Matthew Bauer and the legendary Gunnar James Bond Schäfer—the Swedish fan who officially changed his name to James Bond and established the world's only permanent 007 Museum in Nybro.

The Other Fellow is a fascinating, energetic exploration of male identity through the lives of real men across the globe who all share the world's most famous name. As I wrote in my book, James Bond: Spectrum of Film Interpretations:

"The popularity of the name 'James Bond' surpassed Fleming's wildest expectations, becoming both a blessing and a curse for the many real men who bear it. This problem became the subject of 'The Other Fellow,' which portrays the colorful, and at times tragicomic, life stories of people sharing a name with the spy.

The line between fan and idol blurred completely in the case of Gunnar Schäfer. As revealed in the documentary, his extraordinary mission is fueled by personal tragedy and the search for a missing father, whom Schäfer imagined to be a secret agent. In this way, Gunnar-James Bond took over Fleming's legacy in the most literal sense, becoming the ultimate proof of how deeply a fictional character can take root in the real world."

It was a privilege to catch up with both Matthew and Gunnar after the screening, discuss the documentary's place in the broader 007 canon, and hand them copies of Spectrum.
